Kapwa Walk

Kapwa Walk is a community walking program hosted by Centre Kapwa, that invites people to explore different neighbourhoods across Montreal. What started during the pandemic as a way for Filipinx community members to connect, move our bodies, and support one another’s well-being has since grown into a space for collective learning, community-building, and taking up space across the city.Since 2022, Centre Kapwa has explored many neighbourhoods, including Chinatown, Verdun, and the Plateau. Along the way, we have visited local cafés, museums, community spaces, and small businesses while learning about the histories, cultures, and realities that shape each neighbourhood. The walks are open to everyone, and participants are welcome to join for all or part of the journey.For this Wild Pride edition, we are heading to the Gay Village. Together, we aim to explore the neighbourhood through the experiences of the communities who have shaped it, with a particular focus on stories that are often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Rather than centering the Village as an entertainment district, we aim to engage with its deeper social, political, and community histories, including questions of belonging, exclusion, displacement, activism, and resistance.We are hoping to be joined by a guest (still to be confirmed) with long-standing connections to the neighbourhood who can help ground our exploration in lived experience and community knowledge. As with all Kapwa Walks, this gathering is an invitation to slow down, learn from place, and reflect on how different communities create, negotiate, and sustain spaces of belonging in Montreal.
