PANEL: History & Current Struggles in Prisons in Canada
Prisoners’ Justice Day is an annual day commemorating people who died in prison during the previous year. The tradition began at Millhaven Institution in Bath, Ontario, in 1975, with 11 demands, including the right to meaningful work with fair wages, the right to vote, open visits and correspondence, and more.
Since then, Prisoners’ Justice Day has spread across the country. This panel will introduce people who are interested in building solidarity with incarcerated people to the past and present of prisoner justice in so-called Canada, beginning with people who were at Millhaven in 1975 and continuing through the contemporary struggles of incarcerated people.
